THEMES
While our blog writers have the freedom to explore any legal or policy topic that interests them, our research team works within a yearly theme. Each year, researchers choose a specific policy initiative or issue related to the theme and develop a longer, in-depth piece. You can find each year's themes and featured research projects below.
2024-2025

Artifical Intelligence and Healthcare
For the 2024–2025 academic year, our research team focused on the evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare policy. While several states across the country have begun implementing regulatory frameworks to govern AI in medical settings, we observed that Ohio had yet to take significant action despite being a national leader in healthcare and medical research.

Motivated by this gap, our team spent over nine months researching, analyzing, and writing about AI-related healthcare initiatives across the United States. We studied how different states approached issues such as data privacy, diagnostic algorithms, bias mitigation, and patient safety. Our goal was to help Ohio remain a hub of medical innovation while ensuring that its patients and citizens remain protected in an increasingly AI-integrated healthcare system.

What began as a student research project quickly grew beyond what we expected. Our findings have been shared with state legislators, and our policy recommendations are actively contributing to the development of AI governance in Ohio. The work is ongoing, and its impact continues to expand, shaping conversations and policies in ways we couldn’t have imagined when we started.
2025-2026
Artifical Intelligence and Healthcare
Given the success of last year’s publication and the ongoing impact of our work, the CWRU Undergraduate Law Journal will continue its research on artificial intelligence in healthcare policy for the 2025–2026 academic year. What began as a single-year project has grown into an evolving initiative that continues to engage policymakers, spark academic discussion, and inform real legislation.

This year, our research team will expand on previous findings by examining ongoing legal challenges, ethical considerations, and the implementation of emerging AI policy frameworks in healthcare settings. We will also continue working directly with Ohio legislators and policy advisors to help shape responsible, forward-thinking governance structures that protect both innovation and patient safety.
Our aim is to build on our momentum, deepen our impact, and ensure that student research continues to play a role in one of the most important policy conversations of our time.
